What’s better than a superhero movie?
- A multi superhero movie
That’s what I would call Marvel’s The Avengers(2012). Watching all of my favorite superheroes come together is like a dream come true. It’s been 12 years since they first assembled. I re-watched the movie after so many years and it got me pumped up all over again. If you have the time I would recommend you to also watch it again. I promise you it will be worth your time if you are a true Marvel fan like me. But if you need the gist of the story let me take you back to when they all came together for the first time. If by any chance you have not watched the movie yet please do not read ahead because there are spoilers ahead.
At the end of the movie Thor(2011), Loki falls from Asgard with the rainbow bridge called the Bifrost. After falling from Asgard he ends up in the Sanctuary (an asteroid field inhabited by the alien race “Chitauri”) meeting “The Other” (the leader of “Chitauri”). The Other provides Loki with the “Scepter”(contains the mind stone inside). With the Scepter Loki can fire energy blasts and manipulate minds. The Other offers Loki his Chitauri army to rule over Earth in exchange for the Tesseract.
Back on Earth, The Tesseract is self-activated and starts emitting low levels of gamma radiation. It suddenly opens up a wormhole and through it, Loki comes to Earth.
Using his Scepter he gains control of Dr. Erik Selvig and agent Clint Barton(Hawkeye). They take the Tesseract and help Loki escape the facility. The wormhole collapses on itself blowing up the facility. S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury sees it as an act of war. He re-activates the Avengers initiative, a brainchild of Fury to bring together a group of Remarkable individuals to face massive-scale threats to Earth.
As a part of the initiative agent Natasha Romanoff(Black Widow) goes to Kolkata, India to get Bruce Banner(Hulk). Fury recruits him to track down the Tesseract as it emits low levels of gamma radiation and he is an expert on gamma radiation.
Agent Phil Coulson goes to the Stark Tower, New York to get Tony Stark(Iron Man). He is recruited to review Dr. Erik Selvig’s research.
Nick Fury goes to get Steve Rogers. He plans to send Steve to apprehend Loki.
Steve, Bruce, Natasha, Phill, and Fury all meet at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier which has the capability to become invisible. Helicarrier is the base of operation for S.H.I.E.L.D.
With the help of Clint, Loki recruits S.H.I.E.L.D.’s enemies to build a team. Loki and Clint go to Stuttgart, Germany to steal a rare element iridium which is found in meteorites. Dr. Erik needed the iridium to stabilize the Tesseract’s power. Clint collects the iridium while Loki creates a distraction by attacking civilians. Captain America and Black Widow go to confront Loki. Iron Man also joins them. Loki surrenders after a brief fight. While Loki is being transported to S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier by a Quinjet. Suddenly out of nowhere, lightning starts to strike and Thor lands on the Quinjet. Iron Man puts on his helmet and opens up the back door to check. Thor enters the jet knocks Iron Man, grabs Loki, and takes him on a mountain in a forest. He tries to convince Loki to give up the Tesseract. In the middle of their conversation, Iron Man attacks Thor. They engage in a big fight while Loki sits on the mountain watching and smiling. Captain America drops in to stop them. He convinces Thor to take Loki to the Halicarrier.
Fury puts Loki in the Helicarrier Detention Cell and threatens to eject him if he tries to escape.
Tony suspects S.H.I.E.L.D. intends to use the Tesseract rather than just using it as a power source. He hacks into the S.H.I.E.L.D. mainframe. Steve disagrees with Tony’s method. But hearing Bruce’s logic Steve also goes to investigate the secure storage of the Helicarrier. Bruce and Tony also try to locate the Tesseract.
Agent Natasha tricks Loki into revealing his plan. He intends to unleash the Hulk.
Being manipulated by the Septor, the Avengers become divided and start to argue with each other. Tony, Banner, and Steve find out that S.H.I.E.L.D. is trying to develop weapons of mass destruction using the Tesseract’s power. They confront fury about it. He says that S.H.I.E.L.D. did it because of Thor. Because of him they now know that humans are not alone in the universe. It is a precaution against hostile alien forces. As they are distracted arguing with each other, Barton accompanied by S.H.I.E.L.D’s enemies attacks the Helicarrier. He disables one of its engines with an explosive arrow. The shock from the explosion causes Bruce to turn into the Hulk. The Hulk chases Natasha causing a rampage inside the Helicarrier.
Tony and Steve run to restart the disabled engine. Thor attempts to stop the Hulk from destroying the Helicarrier. Agent Phill goes and collects a prototype weapon designed after the Destroyer’s(enchanted Asgardian automaton) power to stop Loki.
To help Thor a fighter jet to engage Hulk. The jet shoots at Hulk but it only makes him angry. He jumps on the jet and starts to rip it apart. It caused him to crash with the jet into an abandoned warehouse.
Clint gets to the main bridge and disables another engine using his tech arrow inserting a virus into the system. Natasha fights Clint and knocks him unconscious which breaks Loki’s mind control over him. One of Loki’s agents breaks him out of his containment.
Loki tricks Thor into the container and ejects him out of the Helicarrier. Agent Phill tries to stop Loki with the Destroyer weapon. But he gets killed by Loki. Thor breaks out of the container just before it crashes into the ground.
Fury uses Agent Phill’s death to motivate Steve and Tony to work together. Together they figure out that Loki wants to act out his plan in public. He needs to make a statement. And the best place to do that would be on top of the Stark Tower.
Tony, Steve, Natasha, and Clint go to the Stark Tower to Stop Loki. Reaching there Tony sees that Dr. Eric Slavic has already started his device. Tony tries to destroy it but realizes that it is protected by a power shield that is unbreachable. The shockwave from his blast knocks Dr. Eric out of Loki’s possession.
Dr. Eric’s device activates and it opens up a huge wormhole through which the Chitauri army enters Earth and starts to attack New York City.
The Avengers act as the first defense against them. But they quickly realize that all their efforts will be pointless if they fail to close the portal. Bruce comes to the scene late on an old motorcycle and transforms into the Hulk at once which gives them a great advantage as he keeps smashing the Chatauri army like stuffed animals. Eventually, the Hulk finds Loki, grabs his leg, and smashes him on the ground several times rendering him unable to move.
Natasha makes her way to the wormhole generator in an attempt to find a way to close the portal. Dr. Eric now free from Loki’s possession tells her that Loki’s scepter can be used to close the wormhole.
Fury’s superiors from The Council plan to stop the invasion by launching a nuclear attack on Midtown Manhattan. Despite Fury’s denial they override his command and give the order to launch the nuke anyway.
Tony intercepts the missile. He takes it through the wormhole and redirects it towards the Chitauri mothership. When the mothership blows up, all the Chitauri soldiers fall as they are all connected to it.
Tony’s suit runs out of power and he falls back through the wormhole just as Natasha closes the wormhole.
Tony continues to free fall but Hulk catches him and puts him on the ground. They all go and capture Loki.
After that, the Avengers all go their separate ways.
Thor returns to Asgard with Loki and the Tesseract.
In a mid-credit scene, the Other reports the defeat to his master Thanos. Thanos turns to him with a smile on his face as if he has found a worthy world to fight against.
In a post-credit scene, the Avengers enjoy shwarma in science as Tony proposed because they really had a “rough day at work”.
