Do you ever feel no matter how hard you try, you never seem to get the chance to prove yourself? What if someone comes over and gives you that chance? Will it be the same as you imagined it would be? You might reach where you wanted to be but the consequences may be different from how you imagined. That’s exactly what happened to Steve Rogers, our Captain America. If you don’t remember the story of the movie “Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)” you might not relate to what I am referring to. So let’s recap the story of the movie. If you have not seen the movie yet be aware because there are spoilers ahead.
In the Arctic, a Russian oil team discovers an old airplane on an iceberg. Officials from Washington come to investigate the site and find out that the ship has been on the ice since World War II.
In 1942 Johann Schmidt (leader of Hydra, a Nazi deep-science division) Invades the Castle Rock Tower in Tønsberg, Norway. He is searching for the Tesseract (it contains the space stone inside), a cube-shaped object containing unlimited power. There he finds the secret chamber where it’s hidden. He takes it by force and kills the Church Keeper. Although he got what he wanted, he destroys the city.
Steve Rogers, a skinny guy from Brooklyn tries to enlist in the U.S. Army for the 5th time and gets rejected because of his weak physical appearance and multiple severe health issues.
Steve constantly gets into fights and ends up getting beaten. One time he gets into a fight with a guy in a movie theater because he was disrespecting war enlisting advertisement before the show. Steve gets beaten but his friend James Buchanan Barnes(Bucky) saves him. Bucky informs Steve he got enlisted in the army in the 107th Battalion as a Sergeant and will leave for England.
As it is his last day before deployment he wants to spend time with his best friend. They go to the Stark Expo 1943. Going with Bucky, Steve sees that he has arranged a double date for him. But being bad with women Steve couldn’t make a connection with his date. Instead, he attempts to enlist again in the US Army there. Bucky tries to convince him out of it. But Steve desperately wants to serve his country. Overhearing the conversation between Steve and Bucky, Dr. Abraham Erskine, a scientist of the Strategic Scientific Reserve(SSR) division of the US Army offers Steve a chance. Steve accepts it and gets enlisted as a soldier.
At a Hydra base, Johann Schmidt and Arnim Zola (Swiss scientist) conduct experiments to harness the power of the Tesseract. Using machines developed from Zola’s designs they harness the Tesseract’s power.
Steve goes to Camp Lehigh for his training. Where he meets Agent Margaret Peggy Carter and Colonel Chester Phillips. Despite his weak appearance, Steve shows signs of intelligence, persistence, and bravery. Dr. Abraham Erskine believes Steve is the perfect candidate for testing his super soldier serum. Colonel Phillips disapproves of his selection. He even throws a dummy grenade in the training field to prove his point. But to everyone’s surprise, Steve jumps on the grenade to save his fellow soldiers and proves that Erskine was right.
The night before the procedure for testing the super soldier serum Dr. Erskine comes to visit Steve. Steve asks Erskine why he chose Steve. Erskine reveals that Johann Schmidt was the first recipient of an imperfect version of his serum. Schmidt received the serum by forcing Erskine at gunpoint. It gave him super strength but with permanent adverse side effects.
Erskine says that the serum amplifies what’s already inside the man. Good becomes great and bad becomes worse. Erskine sees goodness in Steve.
Back at Hydra base, Schmidt finds Erskine’s whereabouts and sends a spy to assassinate him. Schmidt thinks Erskine’s serum is the only threat that can stand in the way of executing his master plan.
At Brooklyn, Agent Carter takes Steave to the secret military facility for Project Rebirth (the secret project to transform Allied soldiers into super soldiers). Dr. Erskine and Howard Stark(Tony Stark’s father) together developed a procedure to safely conduct the procedure(injecting Erskine’s serum into the subject’s major muscle groups and saturating him with Vita Rays). Steve struggles when the vita ray hits 70%. Being worried Agent Carter asks to stop the procedure. Steve tells them to not stop, he can continue. When the procedure is completed 100% all the equipment gets fried. But opening the pod they find out that the procedure is a success. It completely changed Steve’s physical appearance. He became much taller and muscular.
High government officials observe the procedure from a secure booth above the facility. A spectator among them Fred Clemson from the State Department is actually Heinz Kruger, the assassin sent by the Hydra. He blows up the booth and shoots Erskine. Kruger takes the only remaining vile of Erskine’s serum and runs from the scene.
With his newfound power, Steve chases him on foot. Trying to flee, Kruger eventually gets into a mini-submarine. But Steve jumps into the river and catches him. He gets Kruger out of the river but he continues to fight. The vile Kruger took breaks during their fight. To avoid interrogation Kruger breaks a cyanide capsule disguised as one of his teeth and commits suicide.
Back at Hydra base, Hitler sends three high officials to observe the results of Hydra’s work. They deliver insulting messages from Hitler. Schmidt takes them to a room to show Hydra’s development firsthand but kills all three of them using a weapon powered by the Tesseract. He tells Dr. Zola that Hydra can no longer grow under Hitlar’s command.
Back in Brooklyn at Strategic Scientific Reserve(SSR), they take Steve’s blood hoping to recreate Erskine’s serum. But without Erskine, it would take years to do so. Howard Stark examines the mini-submarine that Kruger was trying to escape in. Senator Brandt walks in there demanding answers. Stark says that the submarine’s technology is way too advanced and the US is nowhere near this technology. Colonel Phillips says it’s Hydra who is making all these advanced technologies. Agent Carter explains that Hydra is the Nazi deep-science division led by Johann Schmidt.
The Strategic Scientific Reserve(SSR) gets retasked to take the fight directly to the Hydra. Colonel Phillips instructs Agent Carter and Howard Stark to prepare to fly to London. Steve also wants in. But Colonel Phillips wants to send him to Alamogordo to conduct more experiments on him.
Senator Brandt offers Steve another choice. He makes Steve take part in public theater shows to promote war bonds. He turns Steve into an actor. Steve eventually gets his comic book and movies as Captain America.
In 1943 Steve goes on a tour to Italy to perform in front of active-duty soldiers. But the soldiers seem less welcoming than his regular audience. They are more interested in the girls.
Steve meets Agent Carter there. She believes being a lab rat or a dancing monkey isn’t his only option. He was meant for more. Steve confesses that he wanted to come overseas as a soldier fighting on the front line.
In a while they see an ambulance enter with wounded soldiers returning from the battlefield. She says that they fought against Schmidt and his audience is the only few remaining from the 107th Battalion (That’s the unit his friend Bucky was in). Steve runs to Colonel Phillips to inquire about Bucky. Colonel Phillips says that he never returned from the battlefield.
Refusing to believe that Bucky is dead, Steve decides to go and save Bucky. Agent Carter manages a lift in Howard Stark’s plane into the war zone. She briefs Steve about the Hydra camp.
Steve sneaks into the Hydra facility and discovers it’s a factory where Schmidt and Zola are mass-producing the Tesseract-powered weapons. They used captured soldiers as factory workers. Steve rescues the captured soldiers. They fight with the guards and break down their defenses. Schmidt observing the riot from his control room realizes that Captain America is here. He activates all the self-destruction protocols in the facility. Schmidt and Dr. Zola take the Tesseract and the weapon’s designs before they run from the scene.
Steve finds Buckey in a room strapped to a bed. They were experimenting on Bucky to brainwash him. Steve also sees a map pointing to all the Hydra bases. The factory starts to blow up because of the self-destruction protocol. On their way out Steve comes face to face with Schmidt. Schmidt reveals his true face tearing up his mask as the Red Skull before abandoning the facility. Steve returns to base with almost 400 rescued soldiers.
Going to London, Steve points out all the Hydra facilities he has seen on the map back at the Hydra factory. He also informs there is another secret Hydra facility absent on the map where they ship all the finished weapons. Colonel Phillips plans to attack all known Hydra bases. He asks Steve if he is interested in leading the missions. Steve says he will need a team.
He recruits the guys who fought beside him at the Hydra base when he went to rescue Bucky.
With his new suit fitted with carbon polymer and vibranium shield, Captain America gets ready to fight Hydra. With his new team, he takes down all known Hydra facilities.
In one of their mission, they attack a running train to capture Dr. Zola. At one point in that mission, Bucky falls off the train and Steve loses his best friend. But they manage to capture Dr. Zola alive.
Colonel Phillips interrogates Dr. Zola and finds out that Schmidt is preparing his army to attack every major capital within 24 hours from the main Hydra base in the Alps.
Steve proposes to attack Schmidt’s front door. He gets to the Hydra base on a motorcycle fitted with advanced tech and singlehandedly takes down a lot of guards but eventually gets captured. They take him to Schmidt. As Schmidt is about to kill him, Steve’s other team members come through the mountain. Schmidt runs from there and proceeds to implement his plan immediately. Steve and his team keep fighting from the inside. An assault team led by Colonel Phillips attacks from the outside.
Schmidt gets on his specially designed bomber plane Valkyrie powered by the Tesseract. Steve also boards the ship and fights Schmidt. During the fight, they damage the control panel and the Tesseract’s container.
Schmidt grabs the Tesseract physically and a bright light devours him. The Tesseract falls on the floor. It melts the plane’s floor and falls into the ocean below.
Steve goes to the control panel to land the plane. But with the control panel being damaged he has no other way but to crash the plane in the Arctic before it reaches a densely populated area. He makes the ultimate sacrifice and goes down along with the plane.
After the war Stark finds the Tesseract under the ocean but no sign of the plane or Steve.
Captain America remains lost to the world for 66 years.
Steve wakes up in a recovery room decorated like the 1940s in New York City. There is a baseball game playing on the radio. He realizes that there is something wrong. Because the game playing on the radio is from May 1941 and he remembers enjoying the game. He breaks out of there and on the street. S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury intercepts and informs him that he has been asleep under the ice for almost 70 years.
In a post-credit scene, Nick Fury approaches Steve with a mission to save the world.
