In my experience, We all know someone who is a manchild with the power to make impactful decisions. But that person often is not mature enough to do so wisely. Hell, at some point I might have been one myself. Then I had to go and learn and take responsibility. Thor our beloved hero belongs to one of them. From childhood, he kept hearing that he would be Asgard’s king. From the beginning, He had everything come too easy to him. He had the power of a god in his hand but all he knew was to fight and win war. He didn’t have the wisdom of a king. If you have forgotten how he lost everything and became worthy and got back his power, please come with me and rediscover his journey. If you haven’t seen the movie, please go and watch it before you read this article because there are spoilers ahead.
In Puente Antiguo, New Mexico, astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster, Dr. Erik Selvig, and intern Darcy Lewis are chasing a storm. Dr. Jane is trying to prove that there is a connection between her research and the recent frequent storms she has been observing. Going into the storm they hit someone.
It is the Norse god of thunder, Thor Odinson.
In 965 A.D. frost giants came to conquer Earth. But Odin, king of Asgard came with his army to help mankind. They drive the frost giants back to their home planet Jotunheim. Odin defeats their king Laufey and takes the source of their power the “Casket of Ancient Winters”.
Odin tells stories of the great war and how he brought peace to the universe to his 2 sons Thor and Loki. He says that one day one of them shall be the king and the king will have to defend that peace.
Centuries later the elder son Thor is about to ascend to the throne of Asgard. But during the ceremony, some frost giants break into Odin’s vault and try to take the “Casket of Ancient Winters”. But the Destroyer, an enchanted Asgardian automaton stops them by burning them to ashes instantly.
As they ruined his big day, fueled by rage Thor wanted to march into Jotunheim, teach them a lesson, and break their spirits. But Odin forbids Thor anything like that.
Consumed by anger and a little nudged by mischievous little brother Loki, Thor disobeys Odin’s order and sets off to Jotunheim. His friends, The Warriors Three (Volstagg, Fandral, and Hogun), Lady Sif, and Loki accompany him. At the gate of the Bifrost Bridge (a dimensional energy that allows Asgardians to travel within the Nine Realms) they are stopped by Heimdall, the Gatekeeper of Asgard and the guardian of the Bifrost. He can see and hear anything within the nine realms at will. He opens the Bifrost using his sword as a key. He let them pass because he wishes to know how the enemy passed through without him knowing.
Upon reaching Jotunheim, they see that it is a cold wasteland. The frost giants couldn’t possibly have infiltrated Asgard alone without outside help. Marching ahead they meet their King Laufey. Thor demands to know how they got into Asgard. Laufey tells him that there are traitors in the house of Odin. Thinking Laufey is lying Thor gets angry. The Frost Giants prepare to attack them. Assessing that they are outnumbered, Loki calms Thor down and suggests that they should leave. Laufey allows them to leave knowing that any act of aggression now will lead to a war. Loki accepts the offer.
As they are about to leave, a frost giant sentry mocks Thor by saying, “Run back home, little princess”. This angers Thor and he knocks down the sentry. Everyone else also starts to attack the frost giants. During the battle, a Frost Giant grabs Volstagg’s arm and he gets instantly frostbitten. But when another frost giant grabs Loki’s hand, instead of getting frostbitten, his skin turns blue like a Frost Giant’s skin.
In the battle, Thor’s friend Fandral gets severely injured. Watching Thor get the upper hand, Laufey awakens a frost beast. The others retreat trying to get Fandral to safety. Thor keeps the frost giants occupied. The Frost Beast reaches up to his friends but Thor kills it. But all the other frost giants surround them. Just as they are about to attack Thor and his friends, Odin reaches there using the Bifrost. Odin tries to keep his truce with Laufey using diplomacy. But Laufey declares war and tries to attack Odin. Odin blows Laufey away using his spear “Gungnir” and leaves Jotunheim with Thor and the others using the Bifrost.
After returning to Asgard Thor starts to argue with his father Odin. Odin tries to reason with Thor but he calls Odin an old man and a fool. Odin says he was a fool, to think Thor is ready to be king. Odin takes all his power and Mjölnir(Thor’s hammer). He banishes Thor to Midgard(Earth) using the Bifrost. He also casts an enchantment into Mjölnir so that whoever holds it, if he is worthy, shall possess the power of Thor and throw it into the Bifrost.
Thor lands on Earth and gets hit by Jane’s van. After gaining consciousness, the first thing he does is look for his hammer. He calls Himdel to open the Bifrost. Seeing Thor is all right, Jane gets busy trying to collect samples from the ground where the Bifrost left a pattern. Thor demands to know what realm this is. Darcy replies that it’s New Mexico. She points a Taser at him as he is talking strangely. Thor asks how dare she threaten him. Freaking out she tases him. Thor loses consciousness. They get Thor into the van to take him to a hospital.
As they are on the way to the hospital his hammer Mjölnir crashes a bit far.
After gaining consciousness at the hospital he starts to attack the doctor and the staff just because they want to take a little bit of blood. They had to sedate and restrain him.
On her compound when Jane was studying the samples from the previous night. Darcy points out that in a picture they took last night there is a human figure in the middle of the event which means that Thor was in the middle of it as the event was occurring. Jane and the team rush back to the hospital to talk to Thor about his experience.
By the time they reach the hospital, Thor gets out of his restraints and escapes. As he is the only one who can tell what it is like to be in that phenomenon Jane gets desperate to find him. Going back to the van Jane backs it up and hits Thor for the second time.
On the site where Mjölnir crashed local people gathered and turned it into a picnic spot. Everyone gives a try to lift the hammer. This is where the end credit scene from Iron Man 2 catches up where S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Colson reaches the scene and informs Nick Fury about the findings.
Jane and the team take Thor to her compound. Thor Being hungry they go to a diner.
Back at Asgard Loki tells Thor’s friends that he is the one who told a guard that they were going to Jotunheim. That’s how Odin found out about them. Hogun suspects that Loki might be the traitor Laufey was talking about.
Observing how his skin changed at Jotunheim, Loki goes to the weapons vault and picks up the Casket of Ancient Winters. His skin changes again like a frost giant. Odin reaches there and orders Loki to stop. After putting down the Casket his skin reverts to its previous form. Loki confronts Odin about his past. Odin Admits that he took Loki along with the Casket from Jotunheim. Loki was Laufey’s biological son. Odin took him hoping that one day he might be able to bring permanent peace between the two kingdoms through Loki. Hearing this, Loki starts to wrangle Odin. Odin claims that no matter what, Loki is still his son and he loves him like his own. But Loki refuses to stop and bursts into anger. With Thor being banished and Loki acting this way Odin wearily falls into Odinsleep. In Odinsleep Odin remains aware of whatever happens around him and throughout the universe.
Being back from the crash site, a couple of local guys enter the diner and talk about Mjölnir. They say it was a satellite crash. it is so heavy that nobody can lift it. Hearing that Thor smiles and asks the guys where the site is. The guys say that it’s fifty miles west from the diner. But the Feds have already sealed the area.
Thor tells Jane if she takes him there he will tell her everything she wishes to know. Dr. Erik stops her because everything Thor says is from childish stories. He is delusional and dangerous. Jane Does as Eric says and Thor bids her goodbye. Returning to Jane’s compound they see that S.H.I.E.L.D. has confiscated all their stuff.
In Odin’s absence, Loki claims the throne and rejects the request from the Warrior Three and Lady Sif to undo Thor’s banishment.
After losing everything Jane finds Thor while and takes him to the site crash site.
Beside Odin’s bedside, Thor and Loki’s mother, Queen Friga says to Loki that they must not lose hope that Odin and Thor will return to them. Loki asks what hope is there for Thor. She says that there is a reason for everything their father does.
Upon reaching the crash site Thor says he will get Jane all her staff back after he recovers his Mjölnir.
He breaks into the facility, defeats all the guards, and gets to Mjölnir. Reaching to it he tries to lift it but fails to wild it because he is not worthy yet. Failure to wild the Mjölnir breaks his spirit. He kneels on the ground and the guards capture him. As he can see all the realms Heimdall observes the scene.
Jane tries to convince Erik to help Thor.
After his capturing Thor, agent Colson interrogates him asking how he managed to beat up his elite team alone. Colson suspects him as a mercenary. He leaves the room momentarily and Loki visits Thor using his magic so no one except Thor can see him. He tells Thor that their father is dead and the burden of the throne has fallen to Loki. Thor asks if he can come home. Loki tells him that the truce with Jotunheim is conditioned on his banishment and his mother has forbidden his return.
Hearing this Thor accepts his defeat and bids Loki farewell.
On his way out Loki tries to lift Mjölnir but he also fails.
Convinced by Jane, Erik goes to bail Thor out. Knowing full well that Dr. Erik is lying Colson lets Thor go and instructs his men to follow them because. This was the only way he could learn about Thor’s true identity.
Dr. Erik and Thor go for a drink. Being concerned about Jane, Erik tells Thor to leave town that night.
Loki goes to Jotunheim to meet Laufey. Laufey instructs his people to kill him. Loki tells him that it was Loki himself who showed them the way to Asgard. He did it just to have fun, to ruin Thor’s big day. But this time he comes with a proposal. He promises to conceal and lead Laufey and a handful of his soldiers into Odin’s chambers to slay him where in his Odinsleep. Laufey asks why doesn’t kill Odin himself. Loki says he doesn’t want to lose the support of the Asgardians. Once Odin is dead, Loki promises to return the “Casket of Ancient Winters” to Laufey.
Laufey accepts the proposal and Loki returns to Asgard. At the gate of the Bifrost Himdel says that he couldn’t see or hear Loki while he was in Jotunheim. It was like the time when the frost giants got into Asgard. Loki says that Heimdall has great power. He asks if Odin has ever feared Heimdall. Heimdall said no because he is the king and Heimdall is sworn to obey him. Loki says as he is the king now, Heimdall is sworn to obey him. Loki instructs him to open the Bifrost to no one until he repairs the damage Thor has done.
being too drunk Erik passes out and Thor takes him to Jane’s compound. Thor and Jane go outside. Thor gives Jane her notebook back which he grabbed on his way out from Agent Colson’s facility. Jane thanks Thor but gets upset because she knows that S.H.I.E.L.D. will make sure that her research never sees the light of day. Thor says Jane must not give up because she is headed in the right direction with her research. He also shares his knowledge about the universe with her.
The Warrior Three and Lady Sif decide to go to Earth and bring Thor back. Volstagg warns not to talk about the matter out loud because it would be treason and Heimdall might be watching. And just at that moment, Heimdall demands their presence. Himdel asks if they would defray their king Loki, Break every oath they have taken, and commit treason to bring Thor back. Lady Sif says yes. Heimdall says good and starts to walk away. Lady Sif asks if he would help them. Heimdall says that he is bound by honor and cannot open the bridge and walks away from the gate of the Bifrost. Looking back, they see that Heimdall left his sword in the Bifrost. Using it they land on Earth. Observing the Bifrost being opened, Loki releases the Destroyer and commands it to make sure that Thor does not return to Asgard and destroy everything.
The Warrior Three and Lady Sif finds Thor on Earth and say that he needs to go back to Asgard. Everything Loki told him was a lie.
Loki goes to the Bifrost. Heimdall asks him how he managed to bring the frost giants into Asgard. Loki says that there are ways other than the Bifrost to get in and out of Asgard. But now that he is king he doesn’t need them anymore. As punishment for Heimdall’s act of treason, Loki relieves him from his duties as the gatekeeper and he is no longer a citizen of Asgard. Hearing this Heimdall goes to attack Loki with his sword as he no longer requires to obey him. Loki stops him by freezing him using the Casket of Ancient Winters.
The destroyer lands on Earth and starts to attack everyone. Watching this, Thor decides to stay. His friends think that he is going to fight with them. He says that he is a mere mortal now and can only help to evacuate the city. Jane, Erik, and Darcy also decide to help Thor.
The Warrior Three and Lady Sif try to stop the destroyer but fails. Watching this Thor faces the destroyer. Knowing that Loki can hear him through the destroyer Thor suggests that he takes Thor’s life instead of hurting all the innocent people. Hearing this the destroyer strikes a blow so strong that Thor flies away getting mortally injured. Jane runs to Thor. Thor says that it’s over, she is safe, and closes his eyes.
The destroyer turns back and starts to walk away. As Odin is aware of everything a drop of tear runs down from his eye. At the crash site, Mjölnir starts to move. It flies towards Thor and he grabs it. He gets back all his power and his attire returns to full glory. Thor defeats the destroyer. Agent Colson comes to Thor and asks about his true identity. Thor says that he and Colson both fight for the same cause. Colson can count Thor as an allay if he returns the items he has taken from Jane.
Using the Bifrost, Loki brings Laufey and some other frost giants into Asgard. Watching this Heimdall tries to break free from his frozen form.
Thor goes to the Bifrost spot on Earth and asks Heimdall to open it. But being still frozen, Heimdall is unable to do so. Thor realizes that there is something wrong. Heimdall breaks free from his frozen form and opens the Bifrost with his last bit of strength. Thor promises Jane that he will return for her and goes to Asgard to save his home.
Laufey enters Odin’s chambers to kill him but Loki attacks Laufey from behind and kills him. His mother says that he saved his father’s life. At that very moment, Thor reaches there and asks him to tell their mother how he planned to kill Thor and his friends. Loki says that he was just enforcing their father’s last command. Loki blasts Thor with the king’s Gungnir. And goes to destroy Jotunheim. He opens the Bifrost and unleashes its full power to Jotunheim which will destroy it along with the entire race of frost giants.
Thor flies there and tries to stop Loki. During their fight, they accidentally damage the Bifrost. Thor defeats Loki but the Bifrost is damaged. Thor is unable to stop it now. Without seeing any other way, Thor decides to break the Bifrost knowing full well he without it he will not be able to see Jane again.
Odin wakes up from his Odinsleep and grabs Thor, as he and Loki are about to fall with the Bifrost. Loki says to Odin that he could have done it. For Odin and all of Asgard. Odin says no. Hearing this loki lets go and falls into the unknown.
With all the signs of Bifrost gone Jane realizes Thor will not be able to return to Earth.
At Asgard, while everyone else is celebrating, Thor morns for his brother Loki and misses Jane.
Odin tells him that he will be a wise king. Thor says that he knows he has much to learn now. One day he will make Odin proud. Odin says he is already proud. Thor goes to the broken Bierost where he sees Heimdall. Thor asks if Earth is lost to them. Heimdall says there is always hope. Thor asks if he can see Jane. How is she? Heimdall says that she searches for him.
In a post-credit scene, Nick Fury introduces the Tesseract to Dr. Erik Selvig saying if they figure out how to tap its power, it may be a source of unlimited power. Having possessed his mind Loki compels him to say that it’s worth a look.
